Advertising Age is reporting that, due to a scarf worn in a Dunkin' Donuts ad that "looked like a keffiyeh, a traditional headdress worn by Arab men that some associate with jihad", Rachael Ray's online ad has been killed. The issue was brought-up and pushed along by bloggers.

Nickel and Dime You to Death
This post has almost nothing to do with online marketing or ad agencies, but it does speak to how little things can add up.
Remember the movie Office Space? The main characters figured out that they could funnel off all the little hundredths of a cent that the bank didn't really do anything with and they figured that no one would notice. Well, I won't spoil the ending of the movie just in case you've been under a rock for the last 10 years, but I just came across this news story that made me think about Office Space.
Oh, the title of this post? My dad liked to use the line about being nickel-ed and dime-ed to death when teaching me about how little expenses can add up or how, from a sales perspective, if you keep giving little bits and bits on price, you'll end up with nothing.

300th Post
Yes, it is true, this is the 300th post on Adomatica. I don't have anything snarky or profound to share with you at this time. I plan to continue what I've done for most of the previous 299 posts. As always, please continue to send me news, gossip, complaints etc. I started this blog as a simple creative outlet for myself without any notion of growing any type of audience, so I guess that makes me enjoy the comments, feedback and suggestions even more.
Thanks for reading.

Voice-Over Talent

My wife has this worthless ability to almost instantly name the actor doing the voice over of a TV or radio commercial. A commercial for Depends...she'll say "Tom Selleck". A commercial for the latest pill...she'll say "Aiden from Sex and the City". Ok, so in that example she is actually naming a character played by John Corbett, who my dad would only recognize from the show Northern Exposure, but that's not my point. I guess my point is this: Neither one of us ever remembers the product/topic/point of the commercial, but we remember the actor doing the voice over.
That begs the question as to whether or not you want to use a well known actor for commercial voice over work. Austin-based ad firm McGarrah Jessee, founded by two ex-GSD&Mers, did some radio and TV spots for McCoy's Building Supplies and Whataburger a few years ago that had some great voice over work, but did so without the big named (recognizable) talent. I think you can still see/hear many of them at mc-j.com since those folks haven't refreshed their website in over three years. In my opinion, those commercials are more memorable then the recent ones my wife is so quick to outburst on.

Tricky Direct Mail Marketers

Ok, so here's another example of a tricky direct mail piece. Standard envelope with a real stamp and address that is hand-written. That got me to open the piece. Contents were what at first appeared to be a real newspaper clipping (with torn edge) and a hand-written post-it note. Nice job.

CAN-SPAM Update Shouldn't be Issue (for most)
From a recent MarketingProfs email:
"Since 2003, the CAN-SPAM Act has regulated various aspects of email marketing campaigns. And now -- after a three-year period of consideration -- the Federal Trade Commission has announced four new rule provisions you should know about.
Following are the four topics that these new provisions address:
1. An email recipient cannot be required to pay a fee, provide information other than his or her email address and opt-out preferences, or take any steps other than sending a reply email message or visiting a single Internet Web page to opt out of receiving future email from a sender.
2. The definition of "sender" was modified by the FTC to make it easier to determine which of multiple parties advertising in a single email message is responsible for complying with the Act's opt-out requirements.
3. A "sender" of commercial email can include an accurately registered post office box or private mailbox established under United States Postal Service regulations to satisfy the Act's requirement that a commercial email display a "valid physical postal address."
4. A definition of the term "person" was added to clarify that CAN-SPAM's obligations are not limited to "natural persons." "
In my opinion, most ethical email marketers are already doing everything to be in compliance with this update...others not so much.

Agency Spy has a New "Spy"

One of Agency Spy's writers is brunt-out and so they are breaking in a new "spy". The lucky recruit is Matt Van Hoven. Matt's "always open to lending advice, especially on how to get a job." He's "helped two people get jobs in the 1.5 years since" he "graduated."
Wow, Matt, congrats on the new spy gig as well as being an expert job finding advice giver.

Da Vinci Now Synarchy Worldwide
From AdAge: "The new WPP Group agency designed to handle Dell's marketing-services business is expected to be named Synarchy Worldwide, a reference to a utopian political system coined in the 18th century."
WPP Settles on Name for Dell Shop: Synarchy Worldwidehttp://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gif
From Wikipedia: "Synarchism (from Greek words meaning "to rule together" or "harmonious rule") is a word that has been used to describe several different political processes in various contexts."
If the new name doesn't pass legal review, "Sector 64" and "Refute" are other names that WPP Properties Young & Rubicam also filed earlier this year with the trademark office.

Top Blog List has Major Flaw

The AdAge Power 150 is a list of the top media, marketing, or advertising blogs based on things like Yahoo in-links, Google page rank, and the list creator's (Todd Andrlik) own opinion.
The major flaw, that I just uncovered, is that no where on the list can Adomatica be found. The "150" list is actually built out to #615, but no matter how I searched for it, no Adomatica.
If a top advertising/marketing blog list falls in the woods without Adomatica, does it even make a noise?

Treadmill Inspiration
I hate running on the treadmill. I actually have not stepped on one during the past four months of marathon training. (Yes, I'm doing a marathon in less then a month - marathon info here) I've always been a believer in the connection between exercise of the body to brain power:
"When your job asks you to brainstorm on regular basis, even a marketing wunderkind will hit the creative wall once in a while. To keep those mental blocks to a minimum, Dr. Amantha Imber recommends aerobic exercise, citing a study by David Blanchette that concludes a little workout pays big dividends in creativity:
* Group 1 did no exercise prior to their creative task. "Lucky them, some of you might be thinking," says Imber.
* Group 2 participated in 30 minutes of aerobic exercise -- such as walking, biking, swimming and runningbefore undertaking their creative task.
* Group 3 also took 30 minutes of aerobic exercise, but waited for two hours before digging in to their creative task.
But group 1 wasn't so lucky after all. "The researchers found that groups 2 and 3 performed significantly better on the task than the no-exercise group," says Imber. With this in mind, she suggests:
* Going to the gym -- or at least for a brisk walk - ahead of your brainstorming sessions.
* Scheduling lunchtime walking groups to encourage creativity during the afternoon.
* Considering mini-workouts when you're in the middle of extended creative sessions.
The Po!nt: Says Imber, "As well as concluding that aerobic exercise enhances creativity, [researchers] also point out that the positive effects of this activity are somewhat enduring, and certainly last at least up to two hours after completing the exercise."

"Bomb Threat" Ad Exec Exclusive...coming soon!
So, earlier today I got a couple of emails from someone claiming to be Rosalinda Baez, the ad exec who allegedly claimed to have a bomb in her bag causing JetBlue to have to land the plane a bit early. I figured it was an impostor, so I had her contact me via her LinkedIn profile and low-and-behold it was the real Rosalinda.
The "truth and real story" are expected soon and I also hope to give you all an update as to what Rosalinda has been up to since the incident.

Well, it was last June that GSD&M won the John Deere account, so now, ten months later I am happy to post that they have actually landed a new client:

The South Florida Biz Journal is reporting that GSD&M only won the creative portion of the account - GSD&M suits up for L.L. Bean
