Ties on Friday

On the final Friday of 2007 I share with you one of my '07 New Years resolutions:

Wear a tie every Friday.

So, on the previous 51 Fridays, I have worn a tie. The only exceptions have been on Fridays were I am officially not working i.e on vacation or just taking a day off and also one work Friday where we were required to wear a company shirt that in no way could (or should) have been worn with a tie.

You might be wondering where I came up with such a resolution. Well, it actually goes back to my first job out of college. I worked for Ford Motor Company and, more specifically, for Ford Motor Credit. I worked at a local customer service branch. Calling it customer service was a bit of a stretch. OK, the service we performed for the customer was that we would call them and ~remind~ them that they needed to pay for their automobile. It was old-fashioned collections about 95% of the time. If we were having a bad week as far as collecting went, we would have to wear ties on Fridays. As I remember it, women had to wear skirts/dresses. It was the complete opposite of the casual Friday trend that was happening at most of the other old-school companies. It worked as motivation. People really hated wearing ties. People seemed to push a bit harder earlier in the week to hit the numbers needed so that we could dress down on Friday.

I never minded wearing ties on Friday, but I never forgot being forced to do so. As 2006 was coming to an end, I started thinking about some possible resolutions. I had given up caffeine cold-turkey in '06 (still caffeine-free today) and a few of my other '06 predictions/resolutions had come to fruition, so I needed to come up with something different, a bit challenging, and fun. I was working, at that time, in an office with a rather loose dress-code (there was not really one) and many of the employees took full advantage of that fact. I decided that dressing up on a typically casual day would be good and that a simple tie on Fridays would be perfect.

It took several months of ties on Fridays before people stopped asking me if I had an interview or something. Truth was, many times I actually did. (On my last day at that job, my VP brought in a couple of dozen ties and many folks wore them in honor of my little stunt, so that was nice) I started a new job back in November and have continued the Friday tradition. No one has asked me if I am dressed up for an interview and I'm not sure if that lack of reaction has got me thinking about not continuing on after today, but we'll see, I've got a few days left before I need to decide on my 2008 resolutions.

Oh, yes, I am wearing a tie today.

Got to Love Creatives - Part 2

A couple of weeks ago, I posted "Got to Love Creatives". The post was in regards to an ad I had seen in a local fashion/entertainment/shopping magazine. Well, about a week later, someone over at nFusion was not too happy about the ad and they took the time to figure out that the "creative mind" behind the ad was Austin-based freelance photographer Matthew Mahon. I know it was Matt because he commented to my original post within hours of the nFusion bigwig ~finding~ it.

"I am a freelance photographer here in Austin and I am the "creative mind" behind this image and ad. I have "NO BEEF" with nFusion at all. I enjoy working with them very much. As a matter of fact any time I shoot for them they pay me well, feed me breakfast tacos and treat me with the loving tenderness of a lioness. What would "THE BEEF" be about ?? The ad was meant to be funny about being at work in a city that is so known for its outdoor and physical prowess, and not a slight at nFusion..."

I guess you've got to love VPs too.

Start a Blog

A business acquaintance emailed me a few days ago saying that he was thinking about starting a blog. My advice to him is this: Stop thinking about it. Start it today. Blogger and the rest of the wysiwyg blog editors make it way too easy. The blog world has a very long-tail. I don't mind sharing the thin end of the tail with other bloggers. So, friend (you know who you are), start your blog already, but be sure to give me a link.

Inspiring Office Spaces

I've worked in a cube farm, a basement with few windows, a kitchen, a cube farm where my cube wall was actually up against a window, and a semi-open office with folding tables. While at all those places, I always said that the physical work environment didn't matter, that I didn't need a fancy desk or a cool office to do good work. My opinion was so strong on the subject that I actually took pride in the poor environments that I worked in. I've recently came on board wth Adlucent, a search marketing agency located in Austin, and I must say that the modern and clean design of our office spaces along with the connecting outside space has already got me singing a different tune about physical work environments. The fact is, depending on the type and industry of the company, the work environment can be very important.

I set out a few days ago to gather up images of cool office spaces. Thankfully, there are several sites/blogs that cover cool and inspiring office spaces and they basically made the "gathering" very easy for me.

These, in my opinion, show some great spaces:
Office Snapshots - a collection of web/tech offices and some others
10 seriously cool workplaces - as the name implies, 10 cool workplaces
Inspiring Workplaces - >150 snapshots of inspiring workplaces
Office Design Gallery - "Inspiration from the best of office design"

A bit about my work environment: Adlucent is the largest occupant of the Satsuma building designed by KRDB Architecture in the Hyde Park district of Austin. Award-winning Texas based architect, Patrick Ousey of FAB Architecture, was commissioned to design the interior of Adlucent's new offices. The space was designed to be open and modern, to facilitate collaboration and creativity, and to pay tribute to the high-tech spirit of Austin. The FAB Architecture team recently recieved the highest honor from the American Institute of Architects for their work on Adlucent's offices.

Ferrazzi on Facebook

This recent email note sent out by Keith Ferrazzi, author the book Never Eat Alone, speaks to social networking and doing a bit of homework before you meet with new people:

"While there's no substitute for a warm smile, firm handshake and face-to-face conversation, social networking sites such as Facebook can be useful tools for building relationships. They are great for finding and reconnecting with friends - and they give you easy access to all their friends. The sites can also be direct leads for business deals and new hires. An old friend recently e-mailed me on Facebook just when I needed help and now we are working on an exciting small project together. Social networking sites can also serve as valuable research tools. Profiles have photos and list job history, activities, favorite things, etc. I always advocate doing your homework before meeting new people, and what a great way to figure out personal holiday presents for clients and co-workers. If you want to know what music I'm listening to, find out what workout places I recommend and see some recent photos of me with a certain presidential candidate, please check out my profile on Facebook. Once you have a profile, type my name into the search box and then add me as your friend. Let's connect!" *To join Keith's blog conversation around this tip, click here.

Keith makes a good point. Use the technology in a manner that makes the face-to-face interactions easier. Makes me think back to this post...

Are You Happy? - a one act play

(The following is loosely based on actual events)

A recruiter walks up to a group of interactive marketeers at an association party.

Recruiter: Who are you with?
Marketeer 1: Client Company C
Marketeer 2: I'm with Client Company C too
Marketeer 3: I'm with Online Marketing Agency A
Recruiter: Are you happy?
Marketeer 1, 2 , and 3 simultaneously choke on their drinks.
Marketeer 3: What?
Marketeer 2: (pointing to Marketeer 1) You know we're actually a client of yours?
Marketeer 1: hehehaha
Recruiter: I know, but I'm very happy at Interactive Marketing Agency S and I'm their recruiter, so I want you to be happy with your job and company too.

The curtain slowly closes as they all exchange business cards.

My question, after seeing this play, is whether or not there really is an unwritten rule regarding agencies stealing each other's employees?

A recent article in the Austin American Statesman (article found here) had this to say:
"Adam Butler, a co-founder of Austin agency the Butler Bros., said there is an unwritten rule in the ad business to not steal other agency's employees"

Maybe it is OK to steal a client's employees or maybe the shortage of really good interactive marketeers is changing the unwritten rules.

Got to Love Creatives

So, the concept of this ad found in an Austin fashion and entertainment magazine is simple. It's a image of a worker feeling trapped in his 9 to 5 job. The copy reassures him that his gym will be open when he gets out a.k.a. gets off for the night and he will be able to workout his stress away. How sad is it to be trapped in such a place? How horrible it must be to work in such a place? Where does that guy work anyway?

Focusing on the sign on the outside of the building gives us a clue. Closer examination reveals that the location of this guy's horrible job is Austin-based advertising agency nFusion. I don't have any reason to think that nFusion is a bad place to work, but I do think that maybe the creative mind behind this ad has a beef with them. Aren't creatives great?

GSD&M Wins Coors Beer Job

I thought that, via a Google alert I just got, I had found some good GSD&M news. "GSD&M Wins Coors Beer Job" the Google alert shouted out to me. Clicking on the link within the email took me to a New York Times article. The article calls GSD&M "a specialist in the Hispanic market." What? I stopped reading and started back at the top of the article. "Published: September 21, 1987" The article was published over 20 years ago. I love Google alerts, but you obviously need to watch what it points out to you. I'm still holding out for some good news from GSD&M.

Toshiba Powers Down nFusion

Toshiba has decided to give its marketing duties for laptops, MP3 players and projection units to WPP Group's Y&R Brands. The business previously belonged to Austin-based independent nFusion.

Ron Smith, VP of marketing communications at Toshiba's digital products division was quoted in Adweek: "We took a long, hard look at several agencies," 'said Smith, praising the work of the incumbent shop, independent nFusion in Austin, Texas.' "It's a fine agency, but geographically set apart. We were lucky to find an agency of Y&R's quality in our own backyard."

Who's Watching Who Watched

Just a quick and simple post to thank the daily (ad) biz blog for mentioning my weekly "Who's Watching Who" feature in one of their recent blog posts: Adomatica's Cool Weekly Feature

Your Brand and Reputation

Adam Salamon's self-branding centric blog has really got me thinking more and more about how people "brand" themselves and how companies do as well. The internet has really made this ~easier~ for us with email (really easy to send out notes etc) and sites like LinkedIn and Facebook (really easy to create your online persona). Those sites have become common check-point items when looking at possible new hires. Check LinkedIn to see how connected they are and see if you know any of the same people. Check Facebook to see if they have a profile and, if they do, maybe get a glimpse of their personal life. Branding for the individual really becomes a matter of reputation management. Many of the methods the individual should use to manage their reputation online can and should be used by businesses.

"A brand for a company is like a reputation for a person. You earn reputation by trying to do hard things well."
Jeff Bezos - CEO and cofounder of Amazon.com

The 869 to 1 Code

Dell just announced that it is set to spend $4.5 billion to set-up a new WPP Group advertising agency. The new firm, launching March 1st will be named Da Vinci and its goal is to crack the code of getting Dell back on top. The new agency will employe as many as 1000 once fully staffed according to reports. WPP already owns 250 agencies in 106 countries with 2000 offices and employees around 100K employees. Once fully functioning for Dell, the agency will be set free to go after other accounts. Interpublic Group was the other player vying for this opportunity.

Dell currently has business farmed out to 869 different firms. Mark Jarvis, Dell's new CMO (What's the average tenure of a CMO these days?) and Casey Jones, VP of Global Marketing, were two of the top executives leading the push for this change. The pair strongly believes that a single point of contact for all Dell's activities will be a source of great results. This idea is met with mixed reviews from those in agency land.

The Austin American-Statesman article in regards to this story pointed out the fact that local/independent shop, T3, might lose a major client due to this change. T3 has counted Dell as one of its major accounts since the early '90s. Jones was quoted, "Companies such as T3 will be able to pitch their work to Da Vinci which along with Dell's team can award work to companies outside the WPP Group umbrella." Gay Gaddis, President and CEO of T3, believes that due to long running relationship with Dell, their business is safe and that they will "still have a seat at the table".

Why would Jones say that companies like T3 would be able to pitch their work to Da Vinci if T3 already had a seat at the table? I think a spot might already be reserved for GCI Group. This WPP owned firm already has an Austin-based office and is already working with Dell's communications teams.
