GSD&M Idea City, Kolar Advertising, McGarrah Jessee, Sanders\Wingo and Milkshake Media Nab Double Digit Addy Awards

(AUSTIN, TEXAS) More than 500 of Austin’s creative elite attended the 2010 Austin ADDY Awards Show, hosted by the Austin Advertising Federation, at the industrial-chic Seaholm Power Plant on Friday, February 12th.

2010 ADDY director Thom Gehring of creative branding and design firm PryorGehring with Jason Hicks Productions transformed the raw space into a Euro club, the perfect backdrop for both the Awards Show and a get-your-grove-on After Party that celebrated the Award-winning entries that will move on to regional and national competition.

“The evening was a great success and provided the perfect opportunity to celebrate the caliber of advertising for which Austin has become known for,” says ADDY director Thom Gehring.

Showing the tremendous depth of the nationally-recognized Austin advertising community, over 680 entries were submitted and critiqued by 2010 ADDY judges: Matt Ian, Creative Director of BBH New York; Kevin Lynch, SVP & Creative Lead of Proximity Chicago; David DeRoma, Senior Art Director of CP+B in Boulder, CO; and Robert Clifton, Creative Director of Campbell Mithun in Minneapolis, MN.

“The Austin ADDY Awards is the largest and most recognized ad event in Austin, which means competition is fierce,” says Austin Ad Fed President Kevin Cassis. “We have confidence that Austin will do as well on the national level this year as we have in previous years, three times placing second only to New York City.”

The internationally competitive field was no more apparent than in the “Best in Show” category, where 6 different agencies—LatinWorks, McGarrah Jessee, Milkshake Media, Kolar Advertising, Sanders\Wingo & nFusion--accepted the highest honors of the night. The crowning achievement was LatinWorks’ “Llama” spot for Starburst, which crossed the cultural divide from Hispanic to general-market TV, and won the “Best in Show – Broadcast” ADDY Award.
GSD&M Idea City came out swinging, and took home an amazing 29 ADDY Awards in all— 7 Gold, 12 Silver and 10 Bronze. Standing out were GSD&M Idea City’s creative campaigns for BMW and U.S. Air Force, which grabbed 10 and 5 ADDYs, respectively.

Not to be out done, numerous agencies took home double digit ADDY Awards, including:

•Kolar Advertising put their best boot forward with a whopping 18 ADDYs, 16 of which were for their creative work on Heritage Boots, which also won a “Best in Show – Art Direction” ADDY Award.
•McGarrah Jessee shined with 15 ADDYs total, 7 Gold, 3 Silver, 4 Bronze, plus the “Best in Show – Branding” and “Best in Show – Print” Awards for their work on behalf of Spoetzl Brewery.
•Sanders\Wingo ran to the podium accepting 13 ADDYs in all, including 4 Gold, 4 Silver, 3 Bronze and a “Best in Show – Logo” Award for the Gazelle Foundation’s “Run for the Water” logo.
•Milkshake Media sweetly accepted 11 ADDYs, with 5 Gold, 2 Silver, 3 Bronze, and 1 “Best in Show – Design” ADDY for their Brand Story Card Set for Populous.

Other agencies that grabbed heavy metal multiple times:
•nFusion, 9 ADDYs, 1 “Best in Show – Copywriting,” 1 Gold, 5 Silver, 2 Bronze
•Sherry Matthews Advocacy Marketing, 5 ADDYs, 1 Gold, 1 Silver, 3 Bronze
•The Ampersand Agency, 4 ADDYs, 2 Gold, 1 Silver, 1 Bronze
•Sweet Leaf Tea, 4 ADDYs, 3 Silver, 1 Bronze
•PryorGehring, 3 ADDYs, 3 Bronze
•SWIZZLE, 3 ADDYs, 1 Silver, 2 Bronze

Two University of Texas students stood out from the Student ADDY Award pack-- Hua Liu won 4 ADDYs in all, including the “Best in Show – Student” Award, while Jameson Rodriguez won a special “Jealous Judges” Award for his clever Redbox creative.

Austin ADDY winners will move on and compete in the regional ADDY competition on April 15 -17 in Amarillo, TX.

I really want to know. Do you feel like you are in the social or new media space just because everyone else is there? Are you really doing anything social or new? Are those you pay or have hired to help you in this space really "digital citizens"?
